The person who cooks meals is called a cook, the person who cleans rooms is called a housekeeper, and the person who cares for you is called a caregiver. But what do you call a person who does all these things and more? They are called certified nursing assistants, or more commonly known as CNAs.
We had the privilege of hosting Mobile and Baldwin Counties Certified Nursing Assistant Honorary dinner in our Home this week. Each of the Homes in Mobile and Baldwin County nominated a CNA from each shift to be honored at the dinner. One of the speakers perfectly described the true definition of a CNA when she said that they aren’t just certified nursing assistants that they are Caring Nurturing Angels who care for the elderly.
We couldn’t agree more! The caring nurturing angels that were nominated from our Home are wonderful examples of this definition and beautifully portray the mission and charism of our Beloved Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan.
Patrice Drinkard was nominated from our day shift. She has been and CNA for 22 years. She has been in long term care for 12 years with our Home for six years. When asked why she wanted to be a CNA she said, “I didn’t take this job for the money. – I love what I do. I knew my calling was to take care of the elderly.” Patrice also helps Sr. Ellen Anne with the Residents’ hair because she says “I want them to look their best.”
Lannie Smith was nominated from our evening shift. She has been a CNA for 25 years and has been with our Home for seven years. Lannie has a true heart for the elderly. She says, “I see Jesus in each of my little Residents and know that as I care for them I am helping fulfill Jeanne Jugan’s dream.” Lannie gives each of her Residents care with love and tenderness. She also helps train our new CNAs so that they too can learn to care for the Residents with the same love.
Mattie Bowie was nominated from our night shift. Before becoming a CNA 11 years ago, Mattie was a Resident Assistant for six years. Even though she has only been with our Home for two years, she is already family. The Residents love her and look forward to when they see her. When asked what she loves about her job she said, “I just love the elderly. I am glad I have a job that I just love!”
Congratulations to Patrice, Lannie, and Mattie! We are very grateful to be surrounded by so many Caring Nurturing Angels at Little Sisters!
