Feast of St. Joseph – Our Greatest Benefactor!
From the very beginning, the Little Sisters of the Poor depended on the intercession of St. Joseph to provide for the needs of our elderly poor. Pope Francis has declared this the year of St. Joseph, so Friday was an extraordinary celebration for our Residents.
In keeping with tradition, the Little Sisters prepare the “Table of St. Joseph,” which has its roots in Sicily. According to legend, when a great famine struck Sicily’s land, the villagers immediately prayed to their beloved Saint Joseph for protection and relief. They prayed fervently and pledged that they would hold a special feast to honor God and Saint Joseph if the rain returned. Miraculously the rain started to fall, and when the fall harvest came, the people of Sicily prepared a wonderful feast in thanksgiving.
At Sacred Heart Residence, we honor that celebration with our own St. Joseph’s Table, combined with “Big-Bucks Bingo.” We also used a roulette wheel to give some beautiful stuffed animals to our lucky Residents!
St. Joseph continues to bless all of us!
