Mardi Gras season here at Sacred Heart Residence was an exciting time for our Residents! Thanks to the Conde Caveliers Society and the Mary Montgomery High School Band, we enjoyed a full-fledged parade throughout the halls of our Home, complete with revelers in colorful masks and costumes tossing treats of Mardi Gras beads, Moon Pies and candy for all! The lobby was full of Residents eagerly anticipating the arrival of the crewe’s bus and the “maskers” visited the rooms of all Residents throughout the Home.
Residents also voted for members of the Sacred Heart Residence Royal Court, including our own King and Queen of Mardi Gras, a Mayor, a Court Jester, and a Lady-in-Waiting and Knight from each unit. After weeks of preparation, everyone gathered for the Royal Coronation ceremony in our Auditorium and enjoyed seeing the exquisite formal gowns and tuxedos, as well as the custom royal robes with embellishments highlighting personal interests and history of this year’s King and Queen. Helping make the day such a special occasion were our friends from the Murphy High School Jazz Band, the Murphy High School ROTC, whose members served as honor guard and escorts, Randall’s Formal Wear and Toomey’s Mardi Gras Candy Company. Katherine Smith, our intern in Activities, did a fantastic job as Mistress of Ceremonies. The coronation was followed by a reception featuring King Cake and punch for all the Residents and guests.
On “Fat Tuesday,” Mardi Gras day, many Residents were able to make the trip to downtown Mobile for a day full of parades and a picnic lunch. Thanks to our many benefactors, friends and volunteers whose generous support make it all possible!
